(Skin Camouflage, Body Image etc)
In an age with airbrushed images and looking perfect, poor body image affects a large majority. People are aware of their body imperfections and having a skin condition just magnifies this further, making it more difficult to cope, especially when our appearance expresses our identity.
This project focuses on how to alleviate the psychological, physical and social effects that an altered image can have on someone’s life by the simple application of specialised skin camouflage products. A recent study of 38 children in Montreal, Canada, proved what some paediatric dermatologists say they already knew – children and teenagers with disfiguring skin conditions who wore durable makeup, or “cosmetic camouflage,” were less subject to teasing and more comfortable in their own skin. SDBM believes that this finding is equally applicable to adult skin disease patients.
We will be building body confidence and self-esteem through various workshops to enhance personal style, colour, identity and image. Patients suffer from conditions so severe you would not know about them. These are not people you see on the street. They don’t go out. There is often no hiding or disguising a skin condition.
